Nandini Menon, MD took a leap of faith and moved to Chicago in the United States of America at the age of 29, after a semi-traditional arranged marriage to her husband Gopi. She never gave up on her dream job of being an Eye Surgeon. Her resilience, grace, and personality broke the barriers and biases one at a time, and she got back into Ophthalmology to complete her training at Northwestern University.
Born in the town of Johor Bahru located at the southern tip of Malaysia, her formative years were spent in an idyllic setting, surrounded by open spaces
and the sweet, nutty smell of palm oil. Though her early education was split between Malaysia and Singapore, she maintained strong roots to her South Asian heritage thanks to many school holidays spent with her grandparents at her ancestral home in Kerala, India. Living in India for her medical training at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, and exposure to different communities as a young professional, in Malaysia, India, and the USA helped her understand and take pride in her nomadic cultural identity.
Dr. Menon continues to practice Ophthalmology in Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA where she lives with her husband. The varied and global exposure has made her aware of inherent social and subconscious biases in every society and aspects of daily life. She is especially interested in helping people, especially in healthcare, recognize and use this knowledge to enhance the quality of their lives, and improve their overall health and satisfaction..
